What is a VoIP Phone System?

The internet is used for browsing, emailing and social networking but it can also be used to carry telephone conversations. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Phone Systems convert voice into data to be transported over the internet. This eliminates the need for traditional phone lines and, therefore, significantly reduces costs.

What kind of VoIP Phone Systems are there?

There are 3 kinds of VoIP Phone Systems:

On-premise VoIP Phone Systems are evolutions of traditional analog business phone systems but they use VoIP technology to connect the call and carry the voice conversation. While these systems are still available in the market today, they are not very popular as they are essentially just a previous generation phone system using more modern technology. They are being replaced by Hosted VoIP Phone systems.

Hosted VoIP Phone Systems are VoIP phone systems that are located (hosted) at the provider’s data centers. The business only needs VoIP phones or softphones to connect the provider’s hosted phone system (PBX). This kind of phone system is delivered as a service by the provider.

What are the major benefits of a Hosted VoIP Phone System (Hosted PBX):
  • Security: A professional Data Center is much more secure than your office
  • Reliability: Hosted PBX services run on enterprise-grade servers designed to operate under heavy load and are much more reliable than equipment running locally in your office
  • Redundancy: Quality Hosted PBX providers operate redundant data centers to ensure no downtime in the case of an outage. This gives you an added element of safety.
  • Remote Access: Hosted PBX operates over internet connections, therefore, you can access your telephony services from anywhere in the world as long as you have a reliable internet connection.
  • Mobility: Most Hosted PBX services offer the option to use mobile phones as extensions on your business phone system. You can, therefore, access your business telephony services when you are on the road and not be tied to your office phone.
  • Scalability: Hosted PBX services are sold by the user (or seat). You, therefore, only pay for the number of users you need and do not have to purchase more capacity than you need. You can also increase and decrease the number of users based on the needs of your business.

These are Cloud Hosted VoIP Phone systems that also integrate Audio and Video Conferencing, Messaging and Collaboration capabilities

Unified Communications provides a more efficient, faster collaboration between customers,  employees and experts throughout your company by integrating telephone features, like click to dial with desktop-based communications, such as instant messaging, SMS, Web conferencing, and video conferencing. Add to that the ability to integrate other applications such your CRM or ERP and you have a very powerful integrated operations platform that can significantly improve efficiency in any organization.
